Destination 2

Frank Lloyd Wright, Spring Green, WI

The View

On our way west through Wisconsin, we stopped to briefly explore the life and work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, a native of Richland Center, WI.

We booked the 2-hour House Tour at Taliesin, the home and studio designed by Wright, where he lived and worked for much of his adult life, situated high on a hill overlooking gorgeous farmland and natural areas. Our guide was knowledgeable and the tour was well worth the time. The preservation organization offers various tours to suit different interests.

There are numerous other buildings in the area designed by Wright and/or his apprentices, who resided in dormitories at Taliesin. We visited the nearby Unity Chapel and cemetery, where Wright and his family are buried, the Wyoming Valley School, and the A.D. German Warehouse, currently under renovation.

I most enjoyed the BMO Harris Bank in nearby Spring Green (above), still in use. We arrived during bank hours and had the opportunity to view the fabulous interior design. On the corner near the bank is the former bank drive-thru, now used as a private home, but with the exterior entirely preserved.

Time for a Break

While in Spring Green, we enjoyed curry chicken salad at the funky General Store Cafe and a piece of pecan pie at Bird of Paradise Tea, where the owner shared with us stories of her travels.
