Italy by Train

The goal for our 2-week trip to Italy was to experience some of the “must sees,” as well as enjoy at least a few more low-key spots. We stayed in 5 locations in the central/northern regions of the country, for 2 nights each (4 in Rome).

The choice of destinations and lodging were largely based on the ability to travel by train, without a lot of other paid transportation or logistical hassles. We needed to do this trip affordably, and also cared about avoiding the worst crowds and most serious summer heat. This was a tall order, but advanced planning helped make it happen.

We purchased our plane tickets 8 months ahead of the trip, and saw ticket prices almost double thereafter. Early planning also allowed us to book hotels and short-term rentals that would become more expensive and less available as the summer approached, and to secure steeply discounted high-speed train tickets. It’s not always possible to think that far ahead, but it worked for us. So thankful for our time there.

  • Rome

A small hotel with great AC and an outstanding breakfast was the perfect home base in this ancient city.

  • Praiano

A few days in this quiet Amalfi Coast village made a restful change of pace from busy Rome.

  • Sorrento

This pretty city on the Gulf of Naples was an easy jumping-off point for a walking tour of Pompeii.

  • Florence

An artsy and historic short-term rental overlooking the Duomo made it easy to escape the scorching afternoon heat.

  • Venice

A boutique hotel away from the most touristy areas and starting the day early helped us love this city on the water.
