Destination 1

Madison,WI

The View

On day one of our trip, we departed NYC at 6 a.m., drove 9 hours primarily through scenic Pennsylvania, and slept in a roadside hotel outside Toledo, OH. Early the next morning, we set out for Madison, WI, the first official destination on our route. After 6 driving hours, including a white-knuckle stretch through early rush hour Chicago, we arrived in lovely Madison, the Wisconsin State Capitol and home of the University of Wisconsin, as well as an abundance of cheese.

The largest of Madison's five lakes, Lake Mendota, borders both downtown Madison and the University. We loved our view of the lake (above) from the Memorial Union Terrace on campus, while enjoying hot dogs and a cool drink at a shaded table. There are numerous campus eateries that serve this location, and it seemed like a great place to meet up with friends, whether you are a Badger or not.

Also Check Out

The Wisconsin State Capitol building, a short walk from the UW campus. The interior architecture and murals were stunning. Free and open admission to the public.

Olbrich Botanical Garden. Lovely, small botanical garden located a short drive from downtown. Includes the only Thai Pavilion surrounded by a garden in the U.S. Free admission. The weather was hot, and we made a stop at nearby Chocolate Shoppe for ice cream at a lovely shaded table in the backyard overlooking a creek-side bike path and community garden.

The Room

Springhill Suites Madison. If I am going to use my Marriott hotel points, I will look for a brand-new property in a special location, and this was one of the best I have seen. In addition to a well-designed room, this hotel features a very modern and upscale lounge and dining area surrounded by windows, and a pristine pool large enough to swim laps. This property is located in the residential and food/shopping neighborhood of Hilldale, about two miles from downtown and nowhere near the interstate. Very highly recommend.

Great Meals in Madison

Cafe Hollander. This "lowland European" restaurant and bar features some serious comfort food, desserts the size of a dinner plate and an energetic vibe. I had an amazing tomato bisque and multi-cheese grilled cheese, Johnny had grilled salmon and we shared a wedge of pecan pie. As a bonus, Cafe Hollander was a very short walk from our hotel and within the Hilldale pedestrian mall, which features trendy eateries and shops, as well as a nice grocery store.

Everyday Kitchen. We had a fabulous locally-sourced meal (mac w/pork belly for Johnny and braised short ribs for me), with a side of very flavorful broccolini and a wonderful strawberry shortcake. Really appreciated their non-alcoholic cocktail selection as well.
